QPASTT usually runs our workshops in person. However, due to COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, we are now holding these workshops online. In order to facilitate the best learning environment for participants we have decided to provide the content of the sessions via training videos that participants can watch in their own time. A question and answer session will be held via Skype for participants to speak with qualified QPASTT counsellors about the content of the videos or to ask any questions they have about individuals they work with.

As this is a large topic we have broken the training videos into 2 x 1.5hr videos and will be staggering their release. The first video will be emailed to you by 5th June. You will receive the 2nd video, as well as the login details for the Skype Q&A session by 12th June. The Q&A session for this topic will be held at the above date and time.

After viewing both videos please email any questions you have to Qpastt_Training@qpastt.org.au 2 days prior to the Q&A session to ensure your question will be addressed.

Q&A Session Cost:

There is no cost associated with attending this training.

IMPORTANT: It is a prerequisite that all participants attending our workshops have completed the Online Introduction to the Refugee and Settlement Experience’ –  This online training will be automatically emailed to you upon registration. Please ensure you have completed this 1.5hr online training before viewing the other 2 videos. If you have attended QPASTT Training in the past and have already watched this video, there is no need to view it again. This professional development opportunity is broken into 2 sections and is covered in 2 videos. The first video, “How Trauma Affects Children and Young People”, looks at key concepts such as:  the impact of trauma on attachment and development; how trauma affects children of different age groups; and the impacts of trans-generational and inter-generational trauma which explains why children who were born to parents with refugee backgrounds may still display symptoms of trauma, even if they were born in Australia. These concepts will be discussed within a trauma recovery and attachment framework. This video will take about 1.5 hrs to watch.

The second video, Responding to Trauma Related Behaviours in Refugee and Asylum Seeking Children and Young People“, will explore trauma related behaviours and how these can be managed by teachers and other professionals to assist children and young people in the recovery from trauma, as well as the importance of systemic thinking. These will be discussed within a trauma recovery and attachment framework to aid children and young people in the healing process. Participants will be able to identify behaviours in children and young people which may indicate a trauma history, as well as understand how to confidently foster a safe and supportive environment for the child or young person and the family. This video will also take 1.5 hrs to watch.

Both of these videos are relevant to people working with children and young people from refugee backgrounds or for those interested in working with them in different settings including case workers, counsellors, mental health professionals and EALD and other teachers.
