Where:

QPASTT usually runs our workshops in person. However, due to COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, we are now holding these workshops online. In order to facilitate the best learning environment for participants we have decided to provide the content of this session via a training video which participants can watch in their own time. A question and answer session will be held via Skype for participants to speak with qualified QPASTT counsellors about the content of the video or to ask any questions they have in their individual circumstance.

The training video for this topic as well as the login details for the Skype Q&A session will be emailed to you by 26th June. After viewing the videos please email any questions you have to Qpastt_Training@qpastt.org.au 2 days prior to the Q&A session to ensure your question will be addressed.

Workshop Cost:

There is no cost associated with attending this training.

IMPORTANT: It is a prerequisite that all participants attending our workshops have completed the Online Introduction to the Refugee and Settlement Experience’ –  This online training will be automatically emailed to you upon registration. Please ensure you have completed this 1.5hr online training before viewing the video on Vicarious Trauma. If you have attended QPASTT Training in the past and have already watched this video, there is no need to view it again. Both videos need to have been viewed prior to the Skype Q&A session held on 21st July 2020.

This professional development opportunity will be delivered by a 1.5 hour  training video and will be followed by a Q&A session via Skype. The training will provide an understanding of the concepts of Vicarious Trauma (VT), Compassion Fatigue and Burnout. Participants will learn to identify risk factors and the warning signs in themselves and colleagues; why and how work in the area of trauma can cause these responses; and ways to prevent and address Vicarious Trauma and Burnout. 
This training is appropriate for anyone who is involved in supporting traumatised people from refugee backgrounds.

Workshop facilitators:

Stephanie Long—Direct Services Manager

Steph Long commenced working at QPASTT in July 2014 as a counselling team leader. Steph is currently Direct Services Manager and maintains operational oversight of the individual and family client services work at QPASTT. Steph has a Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work with research interest in vicarious trauma. She has a particular interest in supporting front line workers who assist trauma survivors to have productive, dignified and healthy lives, and contributing to a community wide humanitarian response to asylum seekers and refugees based on principles of social justice.

Taryn McBurney — Child & Adolescent Counsellor / Training Coordinator

Taryn McBurney holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Social Work and is a Registered Play Therapist through the Australian Play Therapists Association. Her work in the field was initially with children and young people in the disability and child protection sectors. Taryn joined the QPASTT team as a Child & Adolescent Counsellor in the Asylum Seeker Support Team in 2015 and now has a dual role working part time as a counsellor on the Children and Youth Team and part time as the Training Coordinator for the organisation.

Cancellations:
