Details

This one 3 hour interactive workshop will focus on two separate topics: Working Cross Culturally in the Trauma & Settlement Context; Vicarious Trauma, Burnout & Self-Care. This will be a condensed version of the daytime sessions of each of these topics.

Working Cross Culturally in the Trauma & Settlement Context

This part of the workshop has been developed to give participants a greater understanding of the impact of trauma and resettlement on identity. The frameworks that inform culturally competent practice will be explored throughout the workshop. Cultural competence requires workers to have a heightened awareness and understanding of the many aspects of their own identities, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, social class, sexual orientation, indigenous heritage, immigration/ colonization experiences, disability, and spirituality, and to understand how those aspects of their own identity combine to impact on their work.

Vicarious Trauma, Burnout & Self-Care

This part of the workshop will provide an understanding of concepts of and Vicarious Trauma (VT), Compassion Fatigue and Burnout. Participants will learn to identify risk factors and the warning signs in themselves and colleagues; why and how work in the area of trauma can cause these responses; ways to prevent and address Vicarious Trauma and Burnout and how to create Vicarious Growth.

The workshop will be useful for people working in a range of clinical and non-clinical settings such as counselling, case work, community development, bicultural support, youth work, advocacy and education.

Workshop facilitator:
