This 5 hour professional development opportunity will provide an understanding of the concepts of Vicarious Trauma (VT), Compassion Fatigue and Burnout. Participants will learn to identify risk factors and the warning signs in themselves and colleagues; why and how work in the area of trauma can cause these responses; ways to prevent and address Vicarious Trauma and Burnout and how to create Vicarious Growth. 

This training is appropriate for anyone who is involved in supporting people from refugee backgrounds who have experienced trauma.

Workshop Cost

  • $80 (plus online booking fees) for students, volunteers, unwaged and QPASTT members.
  • $100 (plus online booking fees) for all other registrations.

Costs include morning tea, light lunch, afternoon tea and hand outs.

IMPORTANT: It is a prerequisite that all participants attending our training workshops have completed the Online Introduction to the Refugee and Settlement Experience’ – Please select the ‘Package’ option below (under the ‘single or package‘ menu). The ‘Introduction to the Refugee Experience – The Impact of Trauma’ will be included free with two or more workshops added to the cart.

Stephanie Long — Direct Services Manager

Steph Long commenced working at QPASTT since July 2014 as a counselling team leader. Steph is currently Direct Services Manager and maintains operational oversight of the individual and family client services work at QPASTT. Steph has a Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work with research interest in vicarious trauma. She has a particular interest in supporting front line workers who assist trauma survivors to have productive, dignified and healthy lives, and contributing to a community wide humanitarian response to asylum seekers and refugees based on principles of social justice.

Taryn McBurney — Child & Adolescent Counsellor / Training Coordinator

Taryn received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Queensland in the year 2000 and a Bachelor of Social Work degree from the Australian Catholic University in 2008. Her work in the field was initially with children and young people in the disability and child protection sectors.

In 2013 Taryn studied at the Rocky Mountains Play Therapy Institute in Calgary, Alberta and is a registered Play Therapist through the Australian Play Therapists Association. She joined the QPASTT team as a Child & Adolescent Counsellor in the Asylum Seeker Support Team in 2015 and now has a duel role, working part-time as the Child & Adolescent Counsellor and part-time as the QPASTT Training Coordinator.

Parking

The venue is located within the Dutton Park parking area and as such there is a 2 hour limit on street parking. We encourage you to use public transport if possible. We are located near Park Road train station. Please DO NOT park at the Queensland Health/ Qld Transport premises on Burke St as there is a $261.00 parking fine

Pre-requisite for all Workshops

It is a prerequisite that all participants attending our PD Training Calendar Workshops have completed the Online Introduction to the Refugee and Settlement Experience – The Impact of Trauma workshop.

The content of QPASTT workshops are based on the experiences of people from refugee backgrounds and the impacts of torture and trauma, therefore it is essential that all participants have a basic understanding prior to attending other QPASTT workshops.

QPASTT will have an ongoing register of who has completed the introductory online training.

Required Documentation for PaymentFor those seeking to register and pay as a student, volunteer, unwaged or a QPASTT member, QPASTT does require some evidence prior to the registration.

QPASTT require a photocopy or pdf of a valid full-time student card or a letter from the manager of the organisation at which you are volunteering. Please email the Training Coordinators with your documentation at Qpastt_Training@qpastt.org.au.

Payment

QPASTT requires payment on registration. Each workshop has a limited number of participants. Registration closes 2 days prior to the workshop. A receipt will automatically be sent when payment has been received.

Cancellations

QPASTT will grant refunds for cancellations received up to 14 working days prior to the day of the event. Cancellations received less than 14 working days prior to the day of the event will incur a 30% cancelation fee to cover administration costs.

Refunds for cancellations received the day before or on the day of the event will not be granted. QPASTT reserves the right to cancel workshops where a minimum number of participants have not been reached. Where QPASTT has cancelled a workshop, registered participants for those workshops may transfer to another workshop or request a refund. Refunds do not apply to the online workshops.

Transfer Payment to another Workshop

A registration may be transferred from one workshop to another if notice is received within 7 working days of the original workshop.
